Peafowl are most famous for the male’s (peacock) extravagant, iridescent tail feathers—actually long tail coverts—which they display in a magnificent, fan-like train to attract mates. They are large, loud, and hardy birds known for their colorful plumage, distinct eye-spots, and, in many cultures, as symbols of beauty and pride.
Peafowl is a common name for two bird species of the genus Pavo and one species of the closely related genus Afropavo within the tribe Pavonini of the family Phasianidae. Male peafowl are referred to as peacocks, and female peafowl are referred to as peahens.
